A Gurkha soldier has been awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross after he single-handedly fought off an @tt@ck on his base.
There were up to 30 Taliban insurgents. 31 year old acting Sergeant Dipprasad Pun at one point had to use the tripod of his machine gun to beat away a militant climbing the walls of the compound and exhausted all his ammunition. To thwart the Taliban assault, he fired more than 400 rounds, launched 17 grenades and detonated a mine. His check point was near Babaji in Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan. On the evening of September 17 last year, Acting Sgt Pun was on sentry duty. That is when he heard a clinking noise outside the small base.
During an interview Acting Sergeant Dipprasad Pun recalled, ‘As soon as it was confirmed (they were) Taliban, I was really sc@red. But as soon as I opened fire that was gone – before they k!*ll me I have to k!*ll some. I thought they were going to k!*ll me after a couple of minutes, definitely. I think I am a very lucky guy, a survivor. Now I am getting this award it is very great and I am very happy.’
